Distance 299 miles.
We started on the pier at Santa Monica at the famous "end of Route 66 sign".
For us it was the start of 66, not the end of course, as we will head East and maybe, if we get it right, we'll arrive in Chicago next week.
The traffic really crawls on the way through the outskirts of LA. A few miles out the road snakes up into drier and drier country, and works its way into the Mojave desert and eventually Nevada, the state that is home to Las Vegas.
John the Photographer was delighted to see the big "Route 66" painted on the road to Vegas - and it was HOT on the Tarmac. Americans still work in Fahrenheit of course, and it was definitely over 100 degrees out there.
