Route 66 Diary - Day 13 - Springfield IL to Chicago

article image
Distance: 239 Miles

The last day of the route 66 tour.

Did we shed a tear? Certainly not.

Three middle aged blokes in a car for a fortnight is nothing to aspire to. But the trip is definitely an achievement to be proud of.

Before we left Springfield we visited the home of Abraham Lincoln. This was Lincoln's family home in the years between being a congressman, and returning to politics with the Republican Nomination for president.

If you ever get the chance to visit it's a fantastic place - a whole block of houses and streets are preserved exactly as they were in 1861.

We stopped for a photo just short of Chicago to have a photo with the Gemini Giant - a kitsch icon of the old start of 66 - now standing lonely in the car park of the closed down and for sale Launch Pad diner.

Not long after that we arrived in the hustle of Chicago, the windy city.
